Follow the Lanie Fleischer Chester Creek Trail west from a public neighborhood park, then return the same way. The city's mapped main trail is paved, two-way multi-use recreation with a novice difficulty classification.
Start: Valley of the Moon Park, 610 W 17th Avenue, Anchorage. Use the designated public park lot and walk your bicycle along the signed connection to the main Chester Creek Trail beside the creek. Leave parking aisles, play areas, garden plots and the off-leash dog enclosure out of the riding course. Do not improvise curbside parking if the lot is unavailable.
Ride: follow signs west toward Westchester Lagoon on the main asphalt Chester Creek Trail. Set a one-mile outward limit on your distance counter, turn before joining the Coastal Trail if that junction comes first, then retrace. Turn sooner before any at-grade street or railway crossing, closed underpass, barrier or uncomfortable surface. The resulting outing is up to two miles return, plus the parking walk; no official one-mile marker is assumed.
Stay on the main creek path and use an underpass only when open, dry and clearly part of the route. Do not take stairs into a neighborhood, a singletrack branch or a road bypass. No trip around Westchester Lagoon or onto a frozen lake is included. The city's mapped network contains many spurs; adding them together does not give this ride's length.
Effort and sharing: the novice rating supports a recreational outing, with possible bridge and underpass ramps. Walk an awkward approach or shorten the ride. Slow around dogs and children; yield to pedestrians, keep right and announce passes. The city calls for 5 mph at tunnels and in congestion. Give moose room and bring water.
Hours and cost: the city park listing gives 8 a.m.–10 p.m. for Anchorage parks; use daylight within posted park/lot terms. No ordinary trail tariff is shown in the reviewed park material. Shelter rental is separate, and an open restroom is not guaranteed. E-bike class permission remains unconfirmed.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026: the separate park pump-track project still says Construction, with an anticipated summer 2026 finish. That forecast does not establish completion or a closure of the whole creek trail. Keep clear of work fencing; postpone if the public approach is blocked. The April 2026 winter-status page does not clear current snow or ice.
