Homer, Alaska · Up to 2 miles out and back · Paved · Snow-free conditions
Enjoy Mud Bay and the spit shoreline without committing to the harbor end. The city identifies a paved bicycle path on the east side of the spit, with public parking at its base near Kachemak Drive.
Start: use designated Homer Spit Trail / Mud Bay viewing parking off Kachemak Drive at the base of Homer Spit. Walk the bicycle from your space to the signed paved trail. The city and Alaska Fish and Game identify this public access; do not substitute a roadside shoulder, beach or private business lot if it is full.
Ride: follow the main paved trail outward along the spit toward the harbor, keeping to the east-side path. Reset your distance counter where you join it. Turn after one outward mile, or sooner before any public-road crossing, barrier, unsuitable surface or loss of the separated path. Retrace to the same start. The maximum two-mile return is a chosen cap, not a signed milepost route. Parking-area walking is additional.
This short outing excludes Freight Dock Road, harbor branches, the beach, road shoulders and the distant Lands End approach. Walk the parking connection and any driveway interface; never move into traffic to pass a blockage. The broader corridor has street interfaces, so do not treat pavement as a promise of uninterrupted separation.
Effort: earlier trail-organization evidence describes an easy coastal path with small rises. Expect approach slopes and exposed wind rather than a perfectly flat ride. Dress for changing conditions, give birdwatchers room and stay off tidal flats. Turn sooner if gusts, sand, water or ice make riding uncomfortable.
Planning: use daylight and posted lot/trail terms. No base-trailhead tariff or exact trail hours are specified in the reviewed city page; harbor parking prices apply to different areas. Bring water. E-bike rules are unconfirmed.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026: the city still describes the path. The sparse city news page supplies no comprehensive condition clearance; the August 2023 siren-work closure is historical. Check signs before riding. This is a snow-free outing, not a winter cycling assurance.
