Peru, Nebraska · Up to 4 miles return · Crushed limestone main rail-trail; firm dry tread only
Start: Steamboat Trace — Peru public head, Steamboat Trace Trailhead, Peru, NE. Owner explicitly lists public parking at Peru. Use the designated ordinary trailhead, walk its signed connection and take only the northbound main trail. The Tecumseh NRD office is not this head; do not use industrial / OPPD access. Use designated ordinary visitor spaces, respect reserved spaces and walk through the lot to the signed main path. The address identifies a public facility, not a surveyed stall.
Ride: Follow the signed main path north toward Nebraska City. Turn after 2 outward miles or before the first public-road crossing, work barrier, uncertain continuation or uncomfortable transition, whichever comes first; retrace. Walk any initial lot or access-drive interface. Do not use a road or private-property detour.
Distance: Chosen 4-mile maximum return, not the full regional corridor or a surveyed parking-to-parking distance. Earlier interfaces shorten the outing; parking walking is extra.
Permission and effort: Source-backed ordinary bicycle use on the designated improved main path; walking-only spurs and adjacent private property are excluded. Independent railway context describes a flat course; short-return modest effort is qualitative, not a numerical grade or flood-damage certificate. Walk awkward bridges and turn before loose or rough tread.
Planning: Choose daylight and obey posted gate / parking hours. No trail permit required per owner; voluntary donations optional. No horses, ATVs, snowmobiles or other motor vehicles. Yield to walkers; ordinary pedal bicycles covered. Do not enter the trail during posted rifle-deer closure periods.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026 Central (October 21 UTC): Fresh owner page STILL closes Peru–Honey Creek Bridge south of town after wildfire; October 1 was only a forecast. It explicitly keeps the section NORTH of Peru open. This outing stays north and never crosses the closure. Entire trail also closes during rifle deer seasons, ten November days and two January weeks; exact posted hunting dates govern. This is a dated source review, not a field inspection or current-day all-clear. Postpone for snow, ice, high water, soft tread or barriers rather than improvising a bypass.
Bring water and choose suitable weather. Parking walking is extra. No surveyed parking-space pin or navigable GPX is supplied.
