Ride: Follow the main state trail north toward Dunlap. Turn after two outward miles or before the first street, barrier or unsuitable loose tread, then retrace. Omit road / sidewalk sections within trail towns and the separate Peoria city continuation south of Alta.

Distance: Chosen four-mile maximum return from mile 0. Whole-trail 24.7 / 26-mile descriptions are broader scopes, not this outing.

Permission and effort: IDNR expressly permits bicycles on the improved main state trail. IDNR accessibility information rates the state trail easy; its activities page identifies a slight grade. Expect a gentle railway alignment rather than zero slope, and walk uncomfortable lot transitions.

Planning: Daylight within posted state-trail access. No ordinary trail or parking tariff established in reviewed sources; posted terms govern. Yield to people walking, announce passing and obey posted controls. No road detour is supplied.

Access reviewed October 20, 2026 Central (October 21 UTC): Current IDNR start and activities pages retain Alta public access. The prior October 16 region closure-table review had no Rock Island entry; a blank row is not field clearance. Stop for new barriers, debris, hunting-related local restrictions or unsuitable tread. The limestone composition is from historical manager-provided designation evidence; current IDNR describes an accessible easy trail without a new composition inspection. Require firm improved tread and turn before a soft or degraded section.

Bring water and choose suitable weather. Parking walking is extra. No surveyed parking-space pin or navigable GPX is supplied.
