Kīhei Greenway: a short return from South Maui Community Park
Hawaii · Other separated ride
This is a small practice outing on the southern Kīhei Greenway: leave the community park on foot, ride north beside Līloa Drive on the school side, and turn back before East Līpoa Street. It gives you a modest distance and a clear stopping boundary without taking on the street crossings needed to continue onto the older northern greenway.

Kīhei, Maui, Hawaiʻi · About 0.4 mile on the main path, plus parking walk · Paved · Ordinary pedal bicycle
The local bicycling league describes the existing greenway as flat and suitable for beginning riders. This section is separated from the main road, but school driveways interrupt that separation. Choose a quiet time outside school arrival and dismissal, and be ready to stop or walk whenever vehicles or people make an entrance uncomfortable.
Park and walk to the start
Use South Maui Community Park at 1501 Līloa Drive, entering the designated public parking area beside the gymnasium and playing fields. The county identifies visitor parking here. Use an available marked park space, read its current signs, and avoid reserved or event-controlled spaces. Nearby school lots, businesses and roadside spaces are separate properties and are not substitute trail parking.
Walk your bicycle through the park parking area toward its Līloa Drive entrance, opposite the Hale Kuai Street area. Follow the pedestrian approach on the north side of the park entrance driveway to the path beside Līloa. Watch for parking aisles, turning vehicles and people moving between the gym and fields. The walking distance varies with your space and is not included in the ride mileage.
Begin north of the park driveway on the mauka, or inland/school, side of Līloa Drive. You do not need to cross Līloa to start. The wider-looking path on another part of the road is not a reason to change sides: the older northern greenway and this southern section were built on opposite sides.
The county facility listing gives park hours of 7 a.m.–10 p.m. daily. Plan a daylight visit within those hours and follow current gate and parking signs. An ordinary trail or parking charge has not been confirmed. Facility rental fees and permits for organized sports do not establish the price of an ordinary bicycle visit.
Ride north and turn before East Līpoa
Stay on the paved shared path along the school side of Līloa. You pass the frontage of Lokelani Intermediate School, then the Kīhei Elementary School area. Stay out of the campuses and their parking lots.
Watch every school access apron. The reviewed aerial views show vehicle entry and parking connections across the path in both school-frontage areas. These are places for a slow approach, a full look for turning traffic and a stop when needed. Do not assume drivers will yield merely because you are on the path. On the return, check the same entrances from the opposite direction.
At East Līpoa Street, stop on the path before its curb ramp and street crossing. Get off and turn back only where you can leave room for other path users and remain outside a driveway or crossing. If the corner is busy, turn earlier at a suitable clear place. This outing does not cross East Līpoa or Līloa to reach the older greenway.
Return south on the same path to the park entrance. Dismount and walk the parking approach back to your vehicle. Leave playground, field and gym paths out of the bicycle course unless their own signs expressly permit riding.
Distance and comfort
Plan on about 0.4 mile for the main out-and-back, with the parking walk extra. A manual map trace of the selected path gave about 1,126 feet each way, or roughly 0.43 mile for the return. This is a planning reference, not a surveyed track or a precise car-to-car distance. Turning earlier shortens it.
The flat/beginner description is qualitative. No current maximum slope, cross-slope or accessibility certification is established here. Pavement transitions, debris, heat and wind can affect comfort even on a short path. Bring water, yield to people walking and allow plenty of room around children and school entrances.
Current-check limits
Research checked October 16, 2026. Local firsthand reports document this southern path in use in 2016; those are historical surface and alignment sources, not a current inspection. The 2025 Piʻikea road works concern a section farther north. Proposed northern Līloa extensions and the community park’s later expansion are separate projects and are not added to this outing.
Current county park details were available in a public primary-source search result, while direct retrieval of the facility page was denied. No access restriction was bypassed. Recheck park signs, school access, pavement, storm effects and local notices before publication or a visit. No matching ride-preview video or navigation download is approved.
