| Ride detail | What to expect | |---|---| | Format | Out and back | | Distance | About half a mile each way; about one mile total, estimated | | Surface | Paved waterfront path | | Terrain | The city describes the park-to-downtown waterfront as flat; no measured slope is claimed | | Start | Public waterfront parking under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge; use signed public spaces | | Turnaround | Waterfront path at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park, before continuing to the neighboring RV park | | Parking | The city identifies public parking along the waterfront, including under the bridge. Most downtown lots allow two hours free unless signs specify otherwise; obey the signs at the space you choose. | | Timing | A daylight, snow-free outing. Posted access rules and temporary closures control. City office hours and RV camping hours are not trail hours. |

Use the [city parking information](http://www.cityofhoughton.com/police-parking-enforcement/) to locate public waterfront parking. Walk your bicycle from the chosen space to the named Waterfront Trail. Keep the water to your right while riding west. Follow the waterfront path shown on the [city bicycle map](http://www.cityofhoughton.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/BikingMap_2018.pdf); its orange routes also include streets elsewhere, so stay on the waterfront rather than following every orange line.

At Kestner Park, stop clear of the path, enjoy the waterfront, then retrace your route to the bridge. The playground, beach and picnic area are pedestrian destinations: slow down, yield and walk your bicycle where needed. The city identifies public restrooms at Kestner Park and near the bridge, but their seasonal availability is not confirmed. The neighboring RV park’s campsites and reserved facilities are not public trail parking.

This selection follows the dedicated public waterfront corridor. Watch for people, park entrances, parking access and service vehicles; a separated path does not mean an absence of road interfaces. The paved city trail continues east, but that extension is outside this short outing. Do not add the bridge crossing, downtown streets, the rough Houghton–Chassell continuation or natural Nara/Michigan Tech trails to this ride. Bicycles must be walked on the sidewalks of Shelden Avenue if you leave the path for downtown shops.

Distance basis: About one mile is a planning estimate, using the city’s description of downtown as half a mile from the neighboring RV/waterfront park and the western alignment and scale on its 2018 bicycle map. The bridge parking approach and precise park turnaround have not been surveyed; your chosen space and turnaround will change the distance. The parent trail’s current dedicated city profile says 4.5 miles, while RV and master-plan prose round it to four. Neither parent figure is this short ride’s distance.

Checked October 11, 2026: The current city trail, recreation, cycling and parking pages, all three latest-news listing pages and the September 2026 transportation resolution were reviewed. No notice naming a closure on this selected western waterfront was identified there. The resolution proposes a future eastern connection to Cliff Drive; it is not a completed extension or a western closure. Check city updates and posted conditions before riding. Cold weather, ice, snow, lake wind and events can change the practical experience.
