Homestead Trail — Roca to Hickman Road and back — detailed guide

Source review: 2026-10-12. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.

This short Nebraska rail-trail outing follows the crushed-limestone Homestead Trail south from its Roca trail parking to Hickman Road, then returns along the same path. Allow about four miles for the complete outing. This is an approximate map-based planning distance, not a surveyed measurement; your parking approach adds a little.

Start and route

Use the designated Homestead Trail parking at Roca, shown by the parking and equestrian-parking symbols on the manager's brochure map just north of Roca Road. Follow the trailhead's parking signs and leave room for horse trailers. The Saltillo Road address at the top of the general trail webpage describes a different access point; it is not the start for this ride. The NRD's Lincoln office is not a trailhead.

Walk your bicycle through the parking area and join the limestone trail heading south. Stop at the Roca Road crossing and obey its traffic controls. Continue on the rail corridor toward Hickman Road. Turn around on the trail before crossing Hickman Road, in a place wide enough to stop without obstructing other users. Retrace the trail to Roca, crossing Roca Road with the same care, then walk the lot approach.

The brochure places Roca near the third mile from Saltillo and Hickman Road near the fifth: roughly two miles each way. Its diagram is a planning map, so treat four miles as an estimate and follow the named roads and current signs rather than expecting an exact odometer reading. Stop for any other signed road or driveway interface encountered. This is not a crossing-free ride.

Princeton, Cortland, the longer Kansas-bound corridor and city-owned Jamaica North paths are outside the outing. Keeping this start at Roca also avoids assuming that a reopening notice for NRD property clears every adjacent City of Lincoln path.

Surface and suitability

The manager describes Homestead as mostly flat and permits bicycles on its crushed-limestone tread. No measured maximum grade is provided. This can suit a relaxed ride on an ordinary bicycle with tires comfortable on fine aggregate, but it is not an all-paved route. Rain, soft spots, loose material and flood cleanup can affect traction and firmness. Choose a dry, snow-free day; shorten the outing if the tread is uncomfortable.

Horses share the same improved surface here. Slow down, give riders space and communicate before passing. Do not treat this path as having a separate horse lane. Yield to walkers and follow the posted rules.

Trail use is free; trail-pass donations are voluntary. The brochure describes year-round recreation, which does not promise winter cycling conditions. Plan for daylight and obey current posted hours and restrictions. Do not rely on the map's restroom symbols as proof that a facility is operating; carry drinking water.

Conditions and sources

Checked October 12, 2026 UTC (October 11 Central). The directly retrieved manager homepage and both rail-trail profiles say NRD properties have reopened after flooding, with cleanup continuing. A cached search copy of the Homestead profile still shows the earlier closure banner; the newer direct archive is retained separately. Reopening is not an inspection of every foot of this outing. Check the manager's current notice and local barricades before riding.
