Flatwoods — Bruce B. Downs approach, paved loop and return — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-11. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
Start inside Flatwoods Park at 18205 Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, using the signed vehicle entrance and public parking lot. The county map shows restrooms here and a paved Trail to Loop leading into the park. This outing follows that approach, completes the designated paved Flatwoods Loop, and returns along the same approach to your car.
Allow about eleven miles for the complete ride. The county and the water district describe a seven-mile paved loop plus a two-mile paved approach from Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Riding the approach in both directions adds roughly four miles. Parking positions and junction approaches vary, so eleven miles is an estimate. A seven-mile label describes the loop itself, rather than the full ride from this parking area.
Stay on the paved approach until it meets the paved loop. Follow the direction signs at the junction and complete that loop, then take the same paved approach back to the Bruce B. Downs lot. The official park map distinguishes the paved loop and approach from nearby off-road trails. Avoid the fourteen-mile off-road Main loop, Levee Road and other dirt branches. This ride also leaves the separate roadside Bruce B. Downs greenway outside the itinerary. If you want a shorter visit, turn back on the approach before entering the loop, observing any posted direction controls.
The county expressly permits bicycling on this paved multiuse course. A supplemental terrain assessment describes the complete Bruce B. Downs outing as easy with generally gentle slopes. Treat that as an estimate, rather than a survey of every slope or an accessibility certification. An April 2026 rider report also noted holes and uneven pavement near the entrance. Slow down there and inspect the surface; a paved designation does not promise flawless riding.
The map shows several water stops and the route passes the Morris Bridge well field. Carry your own drinking water and snacks rather than relying on every stop operating. Allow for sun, heat, insects and other trail users. Yield to walkers, announce passing, and watch junctions, the parking approach and service access. Follow posted loop direction and any temporary barriers. This guide concerns ordinary pedal bicycles; it does not resolve every electric-bike class rule.
County hours are 7 a.m.–6 p.m. in fall and winter, and 7 a.m.–8 p.m. in spring and summer. Conservation parks close on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and close at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, under the county holiday schedule. Entry is $2 per vehicle for up to eight people; the county says the machine accepts cash or credit if an attendant is unavailable. Under-16 riders must wear helmets. Keep pets on a handheld leash no longer than six feet and remain on designated trails.
The county profile reviewed October 11, 2026 was updated September 21. The district's current list names three hunting closures at other properties, with none naming Flatwoods. That review does not establish an on-site all-clear. Check the county park page, district closures and signs before starting. Nearby Morris Bridge park and river closures concern separate facilities and should not be treated as proof that every Flatwoods route is closed or open.
