Creekside Trail — Custer State Park, South Dakota — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-10. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
About 4.8 miles out and back on a paved path beside Grace Coolidge Creek. The park's current trail guide describes Creekside as easy, gentle and level, and specifically recommends it for a family bicycle ride. This outing follows the named trail between the Visitor Center and Grace Coolidge Campground, then returns the same way.
Start at the Custer State Park Visitor Center, at the junction of US Highway 16A and Wildlife Loop Road. Use its designated public parking and walk your bicycle through the lot to the signed Creekside trailhead. The manager's map marks both parking and a trailhead here. The park office farther west is a different facility; its address is not this ride's start.
Follow the signed Creekside Trail west toward Grace Coolidge Campground. Stay on the paved creek path through the Game Lodge and Coolidge Store area. Cross the creek on the trail bridges. At the Game Lodge Campground junction, continue along the main trail rather than adding the short campground spur. The trail map also shows Cairn and Lovers Leap trails, which are separate routes and are not part of this paved outing.
Turn around at the Creekside trailhead at Grace Coolidge Campground, shown at the western end of the manager's map. Return along the same paved path to the Visitor Center. You can turn back earlier for a shorter ride, but no separately measured short version is supplied here. Avoid adding campground loops, lodge drives or neighboring hiking trails to the published distance.
The route passes developed park areas with vehicle interfaces, including the US 16A approach near the Visitor Center and lodge, store, office and campground access. Follow the signed path and posted crossing instructions; walk your bicycle across road and parking interfaces when needed. Expect pedestrians and slow down at bridges, buildings and busy picnic areas. This is a paved recreational path with road interfaces, so plan accordingly when riding with children. Do not substitute a ride on US 16A for the signed trail.
The park's easy, gentle rating supports an ordinary recreational ride; it is not a measured maximum slope or a formal accessibility certification. Individual bridge approaches and pavement conditions can differ from the overall description. Turn back if a section does not suit you.
Custer State Park is open year-round. A $25 vehicle entrance license covers seven consecutive days; an annual license is another option. This is the vehicle entrance fee, separate from camping or accommodation. Use daylight for this outing and follow any posted trail or parking restrictions. Visitor Center building hours are narrower than general park access: 9 a.m.–4 p.m. from October 1 to Memorial Day, with Thanksgiving and Christmas closures. Building hours do not guarantee parking or trail access outside those hours. Pets require a leash no longer than ten feet. This entry covers ordinary bicycles; a current Creekside-specific e-bike rule has not been established.
Distance and map: the current park guide publishes 2.4 miles one way. Doubling that named trail gives the approximate 4.8-mile return outing, excluding your parking-space approach and the Game Lodge Campground spur. The state reference geometry corroborates the main corridor at roughly 2.36 horizontal miles one way, with a separate short spur; that geometric estimate is not surveyed mileage. Use the manager's map on page 11 of the current Trail Mix guide for orientation. No verified parking-stall pin or downloadable navigation track is provided.
Conditions checked October 10, 2026: the current park profile, bicycle permissions, Visitor Center information and Trail Mix guide support use of this trail. No Creekside-specific closure was found in those reviewed sources. Water and flush facilities may be unavailable during the park's October–April winterization period; do not rely on a summer restroom listing. Check the park's latest notices and on-site signs before going, especially after storms, flooding, snow or ice. This is a desktop research review, not a same-day physical inspection.
