Ride a scenic paved loop inside Manhattan’s Central Park, separated from ordinary through traffic. Expect hills and busy shared surroundings; choose a quieter time and ride at a comfortable pace.
Start and arrival
Meet at the Grand Army Plaza entrance near Fifth Avenue and East 60th Street, Manhattan. Walk your bicycle through crowded plaza areas and follow marked bicycle access to East Drive before mounting. The ride operator describes this southeast entrance and the adjacent Grand Army Plaza / Central Park South bike station as its full-loop start. The plaza has no restrooms.
There is no designated free trailhead parking established for this guide. If driving, arrange legal off-site parking separately and walk your bicycle to the entrance; do not ride the surrounding traffic streets as part of this outing. Rental availability is separate from park access.
Ride
Follow Park Drive counterclockwise north on the east side, around the north end, south along the west side, and around the south end to your starting connection. About 6.1 miles for the main loop, plus the short unmeasured entrance connection. Do not turn around against traffic. If the loop is too demanding, dismount and leave via a permitted exit rather than riding the wrong way.
Surface, effort and crossings
The Park Drives are paved. Hilly loop, including the northern hill; moderate effort rather than a uniformly flat beginner ride. No surveyed maximum slope. Car-free public-recreation loop, with pedestrian crossings, horse carriages and authorized vehicles. Busy urban approach streets are outside the ride. Follow signals, stop for pedestrians, and use the slower cycling lane. Avoid crowded periods if you want a quieter outing. Car-free does not mean vehicle-free or crossing-free.
Rules
Bicycles travel counterclockwise. Most pedestrian paths, landscapes, the Reservoir running track and bridle paths are outside this cycling itinerary. Follow posted lane arrows and signals. The newer Drives guide gives e-bikes and e-scooters a 15 mph limit; do not treat an older general cycling speed as their limit. Check current device rules before bringing an e-bike.
Hours, costs and conditions
Park hours published as 6 a.m.–1 a.m.; choose daylight and obey temporary restrictions. No bicycling permit required. Bicycle rental and any off-site parking are separate paid services; check current terms.
Reviewed October 21, 2026: the Conservancy describes ongoing Drives upgrades. Its alerts list other park-area restrictions; this is not a same-day loop inspection or an all-clear. Check current alerts and posted barriers before riding; postpone rather than using city streets as a detour.
Map reference
The marker is the Conservancy’s published Grand Army Plaza location, not a surveyed cycling entrance, parking space or GPS track. Directions targets the named entrance. Follow on-site bicycle signs for the final connection.
